It was sometime after the ceasefire. Adrian has been drifting around the city, decompressing from the conflict. It all seemed so pointless... Either wage the WAR all the way through, or don't start it at all—the casualties of the day hardly seemed necessary, given the circumstances.[break][break]

Not that he was privy to the details to make those judgments. But when he thought of Bryan being snagged up and run away—only for the ceasefire to stop them dead in his tracks—he wondered what they would do if it were someone like him, captured and whisked away... Nothing?[break][break]

It was best it had been bryan delarosa, in that way; but it opened them up to some vulnerabilities. It would need to be addressed.[break][break]

There was much and more going on that Adrian wasn't even sure what came next. His receiver was lit up with static and garbled voices ever since the battle had started—most of it went over his head. He just kept wandering 'round the city.[break][break]

Where was Rowan? Why is this what he'd wanted?[break][break]

He'd imagined this day so much differently...[break][break]

After the announcement of the CEASEFIRE, much was to be done. Despite wanting to do nothing more than rest in a comfortable bed, stacked with pillows and all their precious pokemon, Jayden found that the moment that once he was temporarily patched up, there was no time to do anything but work.

[break][break] And while, ordinarily, Jayden loved work, there was something about these hours that tolled on him. Something that tickled in the back of his mind, something that made him want to wrap and re-wrap the bandages on his arm again and again — the ones that covered the freshly gained wounds from his own fatality.

[break][break] He weaved through the crowd, glancing at various injured Rocket grunts and directing them towards the medbay. He watched fern delaney and Hitoshi Inoue do the same, which made the heavy feeling in chest grow just a bit lighter. He could've even sworn he'd seen Tempest Quinn and Cillian Quinn limping away somewhere to be tended to.

[break][break] But for some reason, he had not yet seen bryan delarosa.

[break][break] But he was not worried. After all, even without Xerneas avatar, he was sure that his old friend would have made it out of the rubble. He was probably somewhere trying to not get stabbed by mint frost or pierced by one of his steel feathers.

[break][break] As it turned out, though, his gaze ended up falling upon a familiar figure. Not Bryan, but Adrian Malcolm.

[break][break] "Malcolm!" he calls out, his voice sharp. "Report in to me. How is Rowan Wrynn?"

[break][break] Something bitter swells up in his chest. Despite the words of faith from Cillian Quinn and direction from declan walsh to allow him to participate, he was sure a part of him would never trust Rowan Wrynn the same.

He seemed like his attention was somewhere distant as they spoke. Though he offered Jayden his attention, he intermittently stares off into the distance, perhaps at something that drew his attention—or simply avoiding Jayden's lingering gaze.[break][break]

"Did they announce a prisoner exchange?" His voice seemed more dire, which might provoke the others' interest.[break][break]

He was speaking out of order and out of focus, and Jayden was like as not to grow irritated—though Adrian seemed ignorant to his own blunders... What was he even getting at?

[break][break] It wasn't an immediately bad sign, but it wasn't a good one either. It didn't bode well for the blonde that the first moment that he'd been given as "freedom", he'd basically vanished.

Or maybe he knew more than Adrian. But he seemed to be gathering information and making the rounds—and Adrian felt something like this would have been addressed swiftly, if it were known. Probably.[break][break]

He still felt to be a stranger among them. It was a wonder they afforded him any trust or agency.[break][break]

He can't have been the only one to notice—but perhaps this was the sort of thing to get swept up in the cascade of developments washing over Sootopolis that day. He tries to pull himself together rather than droning off—though he remains somewhat apathetic about the situation.[break][break]

No need to be delicate—he simply offered the truth. Mayhaps Jayden would rebuke him with some plain fact and dispel any concerns...[break][break]

[break][break] Launching himself forward, his eyes flared a chilling ice-blue as he grabbed Adrian by the collar. Teeth bared, he snarled.

[break][break] The world was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

[break][break] Suddenly, it felt like the ground beneath his feet disappeared. Nabbed? What did that mean? He'd gotten nabbed?

[break][break] Every detail of their earlier conversation flooded through him and recognition, realization and horror all coalesced into a single pale-faced expression in jayden cross's face that had him looking like a ghost and stumbling back.

[break][break] He felt like he had when he heard of Chu-e Choi's death.

[break][break] He stumbled.

[break][break] No.

[break][break] "No," he shook his head. "That's not possible. Bryan wouldn't - "

[break][break] He sucked his teeth in.

[break][break] This was not the time to be panicking. They would have to act quickly. He would have to gather everyone, gather mint frost, fern delaney, Victoria Beckett. He would have to -

[break][break] "Team Rocket, stand down."

[break][break] Jayden's jaw locked as he was reminded, suddenly, of the words that declan walsh had said upon exiting Kyogre's maw alongside freya morningstar. The armistice. The ceasefire.

[break][break] No matter what he wanted to do, he couldn't.

[break][break] His hands clenched into fists at his sides, until - suddenly - a raw, brand new realization occurred to him. It sliced through him like a dagger, like the one suddenly formed in his hand.

[break][break] Ice-cold.

[break][break] "What were you doing when it occurred?" he growled, stepping forward to grab the other's arm, eyes narrowed. "Why did you let this happen?"

[break][break] Why did you not protect him?

[break][break] Suddenly, an image weave it's way through: declan walsh standing above him, swathed in shadows, Ashley Shepard's defiant gaze, and most of all, his own arm mangled and bruised beneath the Obfuscator's mangled handiwork.

They had been indelicate enough to rattle Adrian from his melancholy. The moment Jayden grabs at his collar, he wears a demanding sneer. It was not done by his hand, had not been his charge—yet they readily looked for a place to rest their blame.[break][break]

An arm raised diffuses the hold, but Jayden just as quickly latches onto that. They're determined to hold him accountable. It's not enough to cause any harm. But the act compromises the admin's reputation, where Adrian was concerned. His arm tenses, but he doesn't rip it away just yet—[break][break]

"Don't you dare blame me," he barked, ripping his arm away from them and clenching a fist, poised to retaliate—but only out of necessity.[break][break]

"We were caught up in a skirmish around the tree—if the BEASTS can't look after themselves, how is it I'M to blame?" They were elites, cherry picked for their admirable qualities: Capable... and loyal.[break][break]

But this Jayden — the one who had spent hours in the frozen wilderness training alongside THEO BECKETT and Elisabeth Fiorelli — knew better. He holds his HATRED at bay, allowing the animosity to fester like an old wound, as the other rips apart from his grasp.
